The Three Ways I Bring Balance Into My Home

Paige Hull

I think we can all agree that this past week has been one of the craziest EVER! We are all navigating the unique challenges that have come up from the Coronavirus and, on top of that, Smoot, the kids and I just moved into a new house! That’s right, this past weekend, just as the spring antique show was cancelled, we were moving 20 years of stuff along with two businesses that we run in a home office, into a new house. It has definitely been overwhelming, but I’m choosing to focus on bringing balance into my life and my family’s life in the midst of all this chaos.

Oddly, this blog post was written before all of this started, but couldn’t be more timely — so decided to go ahead and share it now.

To me, part of bringing balance into my life looks like bringing it into my home. I spend so much time in my home – I work there, dream about the future there, sleep there, eat there, raise my kids there…you get the idea. So, it’s important to create a space that doesn’t feel chaotic, but, rather, feels peaceful. I want it to be a space that inspires instead of stresses and I think this looks a few different ways.

Bringing the outside in. Incorporating plants into your home not only cleans the air you’re breathing, but they bring a sense of life and color that you wouldn’t typically find – especially if you tend toward neutrals like me! I also love the opportunity to step away from my normal day-to-day routine to care for the plants. It allows me to take a break and breathe, while also feeling productive! There are so many ways to use plants in the design of your home, here are a few simple ways that I love.

Utilizing the benefits of essential oils. Smells have the power to relax us, comfort us, or take us back to a memory. Having a fragrance in the background can help to ease my stress or pull me out of my head and into what’s happening right that moment. Lucky for me, right now, diffusers of all kinds are super popular – from beautiful ceramic diffusers to classic reed diffusers, there are plenty of ways to incorporate essential oil fragrances in a beautiful way.

Breathing in the fresh air. Since I work from home, it’s so easy for me to realize as I’m going to bed that I never stepped foot outside that day! Enjoying the outdoors makes such a difference in my day – even if it looks like doing a little work from my computer outside. But, also, there’s something so special about lounging outside with the family or some friends. Something about gathering together around a fire pit, gazing at nature, or watching the sun glisten on the lake is so peaceful and can be incredibly connecting. It’s my number one priority to make sure our outdoor living is as comfortable and beautiful as our indoor living – here are a few of my favorites.

I know most of us have an enormous amount of extra time in our homes for the foreseeable future and hope some of these thoughts resonate with you. I’d love to hear from you — what brings balance to your life when things are getting just a little crazy? Let me know in the comments!
